Airplane + Lake Michigan + Polarizer = Rainbows???

Apparently this is what happens when you use a polarizing filter looking directly into the blazing sun...

  1. Plexiglass airplane windows are under a lot of stress that causes localized polarization. The polarizer on your lens interacts with the polarization effect on the windows - basically you're photographing the stress points.
