On-Location Lighting Allegory Assignment
In the second school-wide photography assignment we had to recreate an allegorical painting by using lights and flashes available at the photo cage. (The cage is a place for photo students to rent very nice photography equipment) I found this painting called the"Allegory of Hearing" it represents hearing through the various instruments and music books as well as a stag lying near the tree. I knew it would be difficult to get a deer in the frame with a bunch of instruments and flashing lights, not to mention a person. So, I decide to take two frames, one with the deer and then another from the same position with my lights and model. This was easier said than done. I got a couple of decent frames on campus, but wasn't satisfied, so I traveled to Mendon Ponds Park where I received a tip that the deer are quite abundant. This tip proved to be very true, there were deer everywhere and I spent a couple hours trying to get one in the perfect position. I finally did with a composition very similar to the painting, complete with building in the top left corner, but, I had waited to long for that shot as the sun decided it was time for bed. By the time all of my lights and props were set up it was to dark to get any ambient light to mix with the flash. So, I went with the shots I made on campus and merged them in Photoshop. While I am not thrilled with my results, I did ultimately complete what I set out to do.

HDR
For our Material and Processes of Photography class we have to create an HDR image. I've played with HDR before but have not really ever gotten very good results. I wanted to photograph something that usually cannot be photographed for HDR. The subject has to be stationary for several shots to capture a dynamic range greater than the camera can in one shot. I photographed a goose and took the pictures in rapid succession while it was stationary.

Frozen Four!
Yesterday a very unlikely event happened. The college sports team I have cheered for my entire life, took on the college I am currently attending in the Division 1 Men's Ice Hockey Semi-Finals. The Wisconsin Badgers took on The RIT Tigers in a rather one sided match-up which for me, wasn't all that disappointing, I am a fan of upsets however and it would've been incredibly epic if RIT had made it to the championship round. But, despite the 8-1 loss I still feel incredibly blessed to have been able to attend such an unlikely event.
I planned to shoot the event with some equipment from the photo cage at RIT, but due to lack of planning I did not get any credentials from the school and had to leave the long telephoto lens in the car, I did manage to sneak a 24-70mm lens in, the longest allowed for a normal fan is 55mm. It was not long enough to get any decent action shots but I got some of the rink in general.
Even though the game was not overly exciting or intense, the whole event seemed sort of surreal seeing the red and orange on the ice together. This was not an experience I will soon forget. Oh, and GO BADGERS!!!

April
April in ROC so far, either hot and sunny or hot and rainy...always windy. Which really isn't that bad of a combo, so really I can't complain about ROC weather for once. But here's a little triptych of what its been doing for the past couple days.
I just used my Nikon speedlight to capture drops of water falling onto an ice cream pail lid. Its rather crude but it wasn't really meant to be very polished. I might do a nicer version in the studios if I have some extra time.
